For fertility clinics across Africa
Every Specimen Accounted For, From Your Tank to Any Clinic on Earth
Specimen management for clinics, storage providers, and couriers. Run it on your own servers or let us host it.
What clinics tell us
The Problems We Hear From Clinics
Paper logbooks and spreadsheets
A logbook proves someone wrote something down. It cannot prove who moved a vial, when, or that nothing was changed afterward.
Evidence for accreditation
Your society's standards and your own consent forms ask you to keep gametes and embryos safe for the agreed storage period and to document every step before anything is discarded. A reviewer wants records that cannot be rewritten.
Power and equipment risk
When the grid drops and the generator has to carry the lab, the tanks keep working, but the people watching them are stretched. A tank in slow decline is easy to miss until it is a crisis.
Custody that stops at the door
The moment a specimen leaves for another clinic or another country, most systems lose it. The courier has one record, each clinic has another, and nobody holds the whole chain.
How OpenCryo Answers
Chain of custody
A container tree that mirrors your real tanks, canisters, and canes, with every movement recorded against the specimen. Know where every specimen is and prove where it has been.
Learn moreAn append-only audit trail
The application adds events and never edits or removes one. Every event is timestamped and records the acting account, and the log exports to CSV for your reviewers.
Learn moreTank monitoring and maintenance
LN2 consumption tracked over time, predicted refill dates, threshold alerts, and one dashboard of overdue and upcoming rounds, so a tank in trouble is caught early.
Learn moreProtocols with dual signatures
Step-by-step protocols run on the mobile app, and the system enforces that the person who performs a step and the person who reviews it are different people.
Learn moreA branded client portal
Your clients see their own specimens, agreements, and order history on your domain, and sign in with a passkey or an emailed link.
Learn moreShaped by the clinics using it
OpenCryo is in active development. Releases ship several times a week. On OpenCryo Cloud, the Feedback panel inside the app sends your requests, with screenshots, straight to the product team. Tell us what your lab needs.
Learn moreBuilt for the Journey, Not Just the Tank
Couriers are organizations in OpenCryo, not a note in a margin. A clinic, a courier, and a storage facility share one instance, each seeing its own piece of the work, with custody preserved through every handoff: dispatch protocols for shippers, in-transit tracking, delivery confirmation, and the sending clinic keeping read-only sight of the specimen after it leaves.
Cryo Medical Logistics, our partner at AFFS 2026, runs OpenCryo as a courier organization.
See how organizations work togetherThe Rules Where You Are
Nigeria
There is no national law governing assisted reproduction in Nigeria; the regulation bill introduced in 2016 has not passed. What exists is the profession's own standard and the country's data protection law.
AFRH standards and registry
The Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health publishes practice guidelines and minimum standards and keeps the registry of accredited clinics. OpenCryo gives an accreditation reviewer what those standards ask for: a complete, append-only record of every specimen and every person who touched it.
Lagos State
Lagos State issued its own ART guidelines with AFRH in 2019, so far the only state with rules of its own.
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023
Sending personal data out of the country has to be justified under the Act, and health-sector controllers of major importance must register with the Data Protection Commission. Where your data lives is now a decision, not an accident.
Elsewhere in Africa
Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt each have a data protection law of their own, and South Africa regulates assisted reproduction under its National Health Act. Wherever you are, the questions are the same: who touched the specimen, where does the data live, and can a reviewer trust the record. Ask us about hosting for your country.
Your Data Stays in Your Country
Run OpenCryo on your own servers or in a data centre in your country, or ask us for a hosted instance in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa. Keeping patient data in-country means no cross-border transfer to justify under laws like the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, and the controls on our security page, from passkey sign-in to the append-only audit log, support your obligations under them.
- Self-hosting is free under the Business Source License.
- An open data format: your data leaves with you if you ever change providers.
- Source code available for inspection by your auditors and regulators.
